Cranswick was formed in the 1970’s by farmers in East Yorkshire to produce animal feed, and has now evolved into a business highly focussed on the food sector, joining the Stock Market in 1985. It operates from nine factories and embraces fresh pork, gourmet sausage, dry cured bacon, cooked meats, charcuterie and sandwiches.

Cranswick is committed to a continual improvement programme of proactive environmental management designed to control and reduce the impact of its activities on the environment. The Company has been successful in reducing its relative Carbon Footprint by 20% since 2007 and has committed to a further reduction of 30% by 2020 (measured in tonnes of CO2 per tonne of product).

In order to meet this commitment the company will pursue the following environmental objectives:


Work together with our suppliers and customers to identify carbon savings and agree reduction strategies.
Implement Environmental Management systems in all our sites to meet the requirements of the ISO 14001 Standard.


Review site Environmental Risk Assessments annually


Set site kpi’s for Environmental performance, assessed and reported monthly to raise levels of environmental awareness in the business

Pursue our commitment to reduce our process water consumption by 20% by 2020 under the Federation House Commitment (FHC2020)
Actively work to reduce waste and identify recycling opportunities available to the business, and minimise landfill.

Ensure that any paper based packaging is sourced from raw material meeting Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or equivalent standards.
Ensure compliance with all applicable environmental legislation, regulations and associated codes of practice.
Monitor and reduce emissions to prevent pollution and minimise noise and nuisance.
Reduce consumption of natural resources and assist in the management of the local ecology.
Assist in the investigation of environmental incidents in which we may be involved.
Encourage our customers and suppliers to use sustainable resources wherever practical.
Raise awareness in our workforce of their role in reducing impacts.
Make our environmental information available to interested parties.

Environmental progress is reported quarterly at board level against performance targets reviewed annually and monitored through internal audit. The necessary personnel and financial resources will be allocated to assist the company in meeting its environmental objectives and business plans, and to ensure that these remain current and effective.
